Finding Support and Belonging at the Daily Bread
Kim’s journey with the Daily Bread began one Wednesday evening, when she stepped through our doors with her 5-year-old son, seeking refuge from domestic violence in her hometown. Initially reserved and withdrawn, she quietly joined for dinner before leaving. However, a spark of connection ignited when one of our volunteers reached out to her, gradually forming a friendship over subsequent weeks.
As Kim opened up, she was able to express gratitude for the support she found at the Daily Bread and the Everyday Food Outlet, enabling her to provide for her son despite her challenging circumstances. When she shared that her stovetop had broken, leaving her unable to cook, our team swiftly rallied to her aid, arranging for an electric fry pan and providing frozen meals for her to take home. Overwhelmed with emotion, Kim couldn’t hold back tears of disbelief at the generosity she encountered, despite only recently joining our community.
Now, three years later, Kim’s journey has evolved. No longer residing in the shelter, she remains an integral part of the Daily Bread family, attending dinners and shopping at the Food Outlet. Throughout her transition to a new life, The Everyday Foundation has stood by her side, offering support every step of the way. From providing essential groceries when she moved into her own unit to fostering a sense of belonging within the community, we continue to walk alongside Kim on her journey of rebuilding and renewal.
